International Conference on Tracheostomies

There is a new international symposium on Advanced Tracheostomy Management and Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation.  It will be held in Melbourne, Australia on September 1-2.  Check out their website at: https://sites.google.com/site/tracheostomyconference2011/.

I'm very excited about this conference as it will be the first conference dedicated specifically to tracheostomies.  I have been invited to be part of the panel on Tricky Tracheostomy Cases.

  1. What is best practice for determining the length of hospital stay after receiving a trach? My son will be receiving one and we've been told to expect a stay of approx. 3 months (best case scenario is 4-6 weeks). My son has been using a bipap for years and the doctor knows I'm motivated and can learn anything he needs me to learn. I understand that every patient is heals differently, but in your experience what is the length of hospital stay with no complicaitons after surgery?

  2. I wish I could give you a concrete answer. Every patient is different, and length of stay completely depends on individual circumstances and other contributing conditions. Another factor is the reason that the trach is needed.

I have limited experience with children and trachs, but I have seen adults have the trach placed, then go home only a few days later. Other patients get a trach after being critically ill on the ventilator for many days or weeks. So, as with so many things, the answer is..."it depends".
